On the 14th of May the hull was launched in Liverpool, England. The fiction in the newspapers reported hull 290 was to be Spanish frigate. In truth the hull warped to a dock under a 50 foot crane was to be a Confederate commerce raider. The Union in America fought to stop the outfitting of the ship.
